Trends in Project Management
Johnson .Wang
Trend (1): From standardization to change
All the ORGS are used to and are trying to standardize their management system, which does not contain systematically how to manage changes.
Due to the changes are in various forms, different sizes and complex links with the ORGS, PMI uses the word “body of knowledge” to cover all the knowledge necessary , IPMA choose the word “competence” to describe the ability , OGC&APM says “methodology” to guide step by step, in order to make the changes into reality successfully。
Trend (2) from project management to program management
PMI: The new Program Management Professional (PgMP) credential has been announced by the Project Management Institute (PMI®). It will be PMI’s first credential designed to demonstrate both project and program management skills(2007)

Trend (3) From Generalization to Localization
This trend is by guessing with limited clues, like credential in construction area, training needs in specialty
Chinese government office replaced the old credential “construction manager” by several new ones, but the new credentials are still in construction domain instead of generalization domain.
The arguments of trend (3):
1. Generalization is the advantage and disadvantage of the BOKS
2. Any methodology comes from the practice and to be applied to the practice, the nearer to the practice, the more value it brings.
3. Certified by the BOKS may or may not have the ability to manage a project, or the certifications are less relevance with the knowledge and the ability in specialty
4. The ORGS in China are overwhelmingly asking project training courses in their related business domain instead of “generally speaking”, which is the situation in 2000.
5. Projects in all the ORGS are quite different in sizes, contents, characters, and processes, which should be managed with different methodology and requires different professional ability (Credential & training)
6. Trend (3) will add value to project management in ORGS.
